About this program

The Master's program in Materials Science focuses on the core of materials, their production, properties, application, and recycling. It covers diverse topics such as critical raw materials, sustainability, recycling, safety, energy, mobility, health, globalization, communication, and ecology. The program builds upon the Bachelor's degree in Materials Science but is also accessible to Bachelor's graduates from other engineering or related fields (Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc.) with at least 50 ECTS credits in general natural science fundamentals. The study profile deepens the fundamental principles of experimental and theoretical materials science with further physical-chemical foundations and engineering specializations from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and micro- and nanotechnology. It has an engineering and technological orientation with a focus on materials technology. The research-oriented Master's program aims to train students with a broad engineering basis, methodological competence, and understanding of current materials science issues in collaboration with all engineering disciplines. The Master's program is a joint program of the Universities of Ilmenau and Jena. It provides in-depth knowledge of the structure, properties, production, and development of all materials (metals, glasses, ceramics, polymers, and composites).
