Enrolling at the University (Immatrikulation)
Once the admission letter arrives, the next step is formal enrolment: the insurance notification, the semester contribution and the documents the university needs.

The Insurance Notification
Every German university requires proof of statutory health cover before enrolling you — and that proof is sent by your insurer, not by you.
Electronic notification
Your insurer reports your cover directly to the university electronically. You need to give them the university's registration number.
If you hold private cover
With private insurance you also need an exemption certificate (Befreiung) issued by a statutory insurer.
The Semester Contribution (Semesterbeitrag)
This is not tuition. It is a contribution to the student union and, in most cities, to the public transport ticket (Semesterticket).

Sending Your Enrolment Documents
Some universities run the whole process online; others still ask for certified copies by post. Your admission letter says which.
- Signed enrolment form (Immatrikulationsantrag)
- Copy of your passport and visa
- School or university degree (certified copy)
- Passport photo for the student card
What You Receive Afterwards
Once enrolment is complete, the university sends the following by post or digitally.
Student card
In most cities it doubles as the semester ticket and is valid on local public transport.
Certificate of enrolment
The Immatrikulationsbescheinigung: asked for everywhere, from the residence permit to opening a bank account.
University email account
Course registration, exam sign-up and official announcements all run through this address only.
