The Application Process
Student visa applications are handled through the consulate's authorised service provider. Appointment slots fill quickly, so book as soon as your admission letter arrives.
Book the appointment
Create a national visa appointment through the authorised provider's system. It issues a reference number you will quote in every later exchange.
Prepare the documents
Collect everything on the consulate's current list. Each document is needed as an original plus the number of copies requested.
Attend the interview
Appear in person at the appointed time. Fingerprints and the biometric photo are also taken at this appointment.
The Critical Documents
These are required in every application. The consulate's list is updated regularly, so compare it against the official version before you go.
Admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid)
An unconditional admission from the university, or a conditional admission together with proof of language-course enrolment. Original and copies.
Proof of funds (blocked account or sponsor)
A blocked-account statement covering one year of living costs, or a sponsor's formal undertaking (Verpflichtungserklärung).
Health insurance (Krankenversicherung)
Travel health insurance covering your first months, plus confirmation of statutory or private student cover in Germany.
Language certificate
Official proof matching your language of instruction: TestDaF, DSH or Goethe for German; IELTS or TOEFL for English.
What the Interview Asks
The interview is usually held in your own language or your language of instruction. Its purpose is to confirm that you genuinely intend to study and that your finances hold up. Common questions:
- Why do you want to study in Germany?
- Why did you choose this programme and this university?
- What are your plans after graduating?
- How will you finance your studies and your living costs?
