About this program

The Bachelor's program in Wall Painting Conservation and Restoration provides the foundational knowledge. It includes interdisciplinary lectures and exercises on scientific working methods, documentation, media literacy, and natural and humanities sciences. Subject-specific lectures and seminars cover materials science, art technology, and conservation science. Students learn to assess the material composition and aging processes of objects in relation to their cultural significance, understand the technical evaluation of objects and materials, and methods for securing and repairing damage. This is complemented by an in-depth materials science understanding of historical, craft, and artistic techniques, as well as modern conservation methods. Many interdisciplinary topics accompany the subject-specific studies, creating a diverse and creative environment. A significant portion of the Bachelor's program is dedicated to working on original objects, with practical components exceeding 50%. Excursions, both domestic and international, supplement the curriculum and foster exchange with other disciplines. The Bachelor's program concludes with a 4-month Bachelor's thesis and a final examination, leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). This degree corresponds to Level 6 of the 'Professional Guidelines' of the European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers Organizations (E.C.C.O.). The B.A. degree does not yet qualify for independent professional practice, making the M.A. degree recommended.
