About this program
Systemic counseling is a key practical skill in all fields of social work, social pedagogy, and therapy. It is a form of individual counseling that supports people in reflecting on and shaping their life contexts, family life, and work. It focuses on creating solutions rather than analyzing problems. Systemic counselors do not offer directive solutions but support clients in using their knowledge and resources, and encourage them in formulating and achieving their goals. Complex systemic contexts and the dynamics of individual situations, personal, social, family, and professional roles, and the living environment are utilized. The additional training in Systemic Counseling enables all graduates to participate in the "Systemic Therapy" further training, which can be completed at HISA or at other institutes of the DGSF or SG professional associations nationwide. The curriculum of the Master's program in Social Work already includes some of the competencies to be imparted for Systemic Counseling. For a certificate, only the module additional courses need to be completed, saving time and money. The module additional courses are based on the guidelines of the Systemic Society (SG) and are certified by the German Association for Systemic Therapy, Counseling, and Family Therapy (DGSF). Upon completion of the Master's degree in Social Work and the module additional courses, graduates will receive a "Systemic Counselor" certificate in addition to their Master of Arts degree. Upon successful completion, participants can have their degree additionally recognized by the DGSF and SG professional associations. Recognition by the DGSF also means recognition by the German Association for Counseling (DGfB), as the further training also meets the DGfB's criteria for counseling. Applying for a job after completing the Master's degree provides a recognized advantage in the job market as a certified Systemic Counselor, as it attests to competencies in interpersonal interaction and constructive communication.
