About this program

The program "Evangelische Theologie/Kirchlicher Abschluss" prepares students for the pastoral office in one of the member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD). The final examination ("Theologische Aufnahmeprüfung") is typically taken with the respective regional church. The curriculum covers classical theological subjects such as Old and New Testament, Systematic Theology, Church History and Dogmatics, and Practical Theology, fostering critical reflection on Christian faith and the church. Augustana-Hochschule is unique in Germany for having a permanent professorship in Feminist Theology. Philosophy and Intercultural Theology/Missiology and Religious Studies are also represented by professorships. The program consists of three phases: language acquisition (optional), Basic Studies (4 semesters, 120 ECTS), Main Studies (4 semesters, 120 ECTS), and Integration Phase (2 semesters, 60 ECTS). The Basic and Main Studies include compulsory, elective, and optional modules. The compulsory modules cover core theological disciplines and an interdisciplinary component. Elective modules include Intercultural Theology/Missiology and Religious Studies, and Philosophy. Students are required to take at least one module from each of these two areas in both Basic and Main Studies, as well as a course in Feminist Theology. Optional modules allow for further specialization within these areas or in "Studium Generale," which can include courses from other academic disciplines and professional development qualifications.
