About this program
The Bachelor of Arts program in Social Work is generally oriented, meaning students are trained for the entire spectrum of the profession. Through workshops, project days, and elective modules, students can pursue their individual inclinations and explore areas of interest. The program concludes with the acquisition of the academic degree Bachelor of Arts (B. A.). State recognition is granted upon application. The close link between theory and practice is a characteristic feature of the program, which is well-connected in relevant professional fields with authorities, independent organizations, and (inter)national universities. In conjunction with the study of Social Work, a certified qualification in Theater Education can be obtained, which is recognized as basic training by the Federal Association for Theater Education. Alternatively, there is the option to complete a study-accompanying, internationally oriented additional qualification with ISA+, which prepares for professional activities in cross-border fields of work. Currently, there is the possibility to specialize in working for the Berlin administration with the support of a scholarship. The Social Work program at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Berlin is committed to human rights and social justice. We actively advocate for the respect of the dignity of all people and against discrimination. We train students for a professional practice that aims to enable social support, societal participation, and legal equality, especially for structurally disadvantaged individuals and groups. We, as educators, are committed to taking responsibility for an open and constructive teaching and learning environment at the EHB by fostering a dialogical, respectful approach. This also includes analyzing processes and mechanisms of discrimination anchored in society, science, and practice, as well as critically questioning and problematizing inequalities. Antisemitism, racism, unequal treatment of genders, and the devaluation and exclusion of people based on sexual orientation, disability, or class or social status contradict our professional ethical principles. We firmly oppose attempts to violate human dignity and equality – in higher education and society. The program imparts theoretical knowledge, practical-methodological skills, and professional competencies that enable students to work professionally, including independently, in the entire spectrum of Social Work. The curriculum is modular. The 1st semester begins with workshops where students get to know a field of practice in Social Work right at the beginning of their studies. The professional internship is completed in the 4th semester. Specialization opportunities arise in the 5th and 6th semesters through two-semester project days, where students work on concrete projects that enable additional practical and research experience, also developing the interdisciplinary and socio-political dimension of Social Work. The goal of the Bachelor's program is to acquire subject-specific basic knowledge based on the latest scientific findings and to develop the necessary action competencies (subject, method, social, and self-competencies) for the professional activities of social workers. Accordingly, practice-oriented and action-oriented teaching on a scientific basis is aimed for. Students are enabled to critically reflect on and further develop the professional task of Social Work, promoting participation, self-determination, and human dignity. Additionally, they can acquire a certified qualification in Theater Education or alternatively complete an internationally oriented additional qualification with ISA+.
