About this program
The Master's program in School Music (Q-Master) is designed for individuals who have completed a degree in music (artistic, artistic-scientific, or artistic-pedagogical) and wish to qualify as music teachers at secondary schools (Stadtteilschulen and Gymnasien). The program leads to a Master of Education degree and provides access to the preparatory service, which concludes with the Second State Examination, granting full teaching qualification in Hamburg. The curriculum includes artistic and artistic-practical skills in two instruments, singing, school piano playing, music and movement/rhythmics, choir conducting, orchestra conducting, arranging, school score reading, and speech training. Theoretical-scientific knowledge is acquired in applied music theory, form theory, ear training, analysis and interpretation, and historical and systematic musicology. Artistic and theoretical skills are combined with pedagogical insights in seminars on school music practice and its didactics, as well as music education and inclusion, and are tested in the practical field of school. The study content encompasses Western art music, non-European music, jazz, folklore, and various forms of popular music. The program is a collaboration between HfMT Hamburg and the University of Hamburg, with music subjects taught at HfMT and educational science and subject-specific didactics at the University of Hamburg. It also includes orientation and core internships, and a Master's thesis written at the University of Hamburg. Graduates deepen their music pedagogical competencies and engage with current concepts of music mediation, musicology, music pedagogy, and the institutional framework of school education.
