About this program
The master's program in Schriftgestaltung (Type Design) focuses on the practical and theoretical aspects of creating and developing typefaces. It begins with foundational exercises in writing and drawing to understand the form, function, and historical development of Latin script. Students will design texts (calligraphy), lettering, alphabets, and symbol systems, exploring design principles through form understanding derived from writing and free experimentation. Typical outputs include writing samples, logotypes, logos, posters, and digital fonts. The program allows for individual tailoring of projects, such as modular systems, animations, or stencils. Typography and book design are taught theoretically through lectures and practically through exercises. Students have the opportunity to design, digitize, and produce their own typefaces or font families, with individual specialization options in conception for specific applications, developing different cuts, alternative characters, decorative letters, icons, symbols, and OpenType programming. The curriculum is part of the Typography and Book Design department and is open to students from all disciplines. Collaborations with the Muthesius Academy's workshops are common, including a Litho-Lettering course. Students can also pursue a free work with a focus on 'Type' or engage with theoretical aspects through presentations or house papers in consultation with the Institute for Art and Media Sciences. The program supports students in developing a thesis related to type design.
