About this program
The Master's program in Resource-Efficient Architecture builds seamlessly on the four-year Bachelor's program in Architecture. Students develop new competencies in the holistic consideration of structural issues and deepen their fundamental knowledge from the Bachelor's program. The goal is to train architects with a holistic approach who can independently implement projects and explore innovative realization possibilities. Students work in project groups on realistic problems and learn to solve them holistically and independently. To master the complex challenges of architectural planning and realization, future architects learn to grasp and weigh structural-technical, economic-ecological, artistic-design, and socio-political dependencies. The increasing phenomena of climate change require a critical examination of the profession. The construction sector causes about 25% of national CO2 emissions and accounts for 40% of energy consumption. This necessitates a contemporary re-examination of architectural education and the profession. Discursive concepts such as 'sustainable building,' 'simple building,' 'building transition,' and the EU's 'New European Bauhaus' are increasingly coming into focus. Master's students should also be able to develop conceptual and computationally proven design approaches that include bioeconomic and resource-efficient aspects of construction as integral components of design. The central format of the program is the Master's Studio, which, as a design studio, reflects the diverse positions of our subject offerings. The self-chosen final thesis is conceptually refined and developed under academic supervision in the first semester and elaborated as a final thesis in the second semester. In the Master's Studio, small groups of a maximum of 10 students work on projects and concepts. Realistic issues and interdisciplinary collaboration provide students with insight into the daily work of an architectural firm. Within this format, students are also empowered to think and plan sustainably – in ecological and economic terms, as well as in relation to social and cultural resources. Students are always encouraged to experiment and try new approaches. This experimental character complements and expands fundamental knowledge from the Bachelor's program. In addition to stable design competence, the Master's program aims to provide contemporary expertise in bioeconomy, which will be indispensable and necessary in later professional life with regard to climate protection goals. Furthermore, we offer our students added value in the Master's Studio by attracting renowned visiting professors.
