About this program
The study program Regie Schauspiel focuses on collaboration with actors. From the first semester, directing, acting, and dramaturgy students work together on joint scene studies and projects. Another focus is the exploration of the tension between text and stage. Authors are integrated as artistic partners through collaboration with the scenic writing program at UdK Berlin. In the annual Hamburg Poetics Lecture, authors discuss their writing for theater, and actors discuss the poetics of performance. Methods of scenic text creation can be tested in projects within the scope of play development. In the first semesters of the three-year study program, fundamental craft skills in body, space, scene, and performance are taught. This also includes the use of aesthetic design elements such as light, technology, multimedia, stage design, and costumes. Rehearsal processes, production conditions, and workflows are analyzed and consciously designed. The second part opens up artistic exploration to other formats such as site-specific, multimedia approaches, theater for young audiences, and inclusive ensembles. Projects are created in close cooperation with the stage designers of HFBK and the costume design students of HAW. The artistic-scientific study provides an overview of theater theoretical, historical, and aesthetic discourses as well as socio-sociological questions. Research questions from various scientific disciplines are deepened in regular symposia. The focus of the study is not on the result, i.e., the presentation of a project, but on the rehearsal process as the exploration of scenic possibilities. Lecturers from theater practice accompany students in their artistic development.
