About this program
The Regie Musiktheater (Music Theater Directing) program imparts both music-theoretical and theater-practical aspects. The basic studies (semesters 1-3) focus on learning practical skills such as directing performers, scenic handling of music, space, light, and costumes in directing classes and accompanying courses. Each of these three semesters is dedicated to a specific style period (Early Music, Classical Repertoire Opera, and Contemporary Music Theater), which students engage with in both practical and theoretical subjects. The main studies (semesters 4-6) involve students learning to work in various scenic formats (site-specific theater, theater for young audiences, diverse other staging techniques). The goal is to address the great media complexity and diversity of the music theater genre. Through the option to attend interdisciplinary courses at HfMT and the University of Hamburg, the program is designed for the development of individual study profiles. Three directing projects with progressively increasing demands run through the program. While the first study project focuses on working with a few singers and musicians, the final examination results in a highly complex music theater production. A special feature of the Theater Academy is the networked training with the degree programs Regie Schauspiel (Acting Directing), Gesang (Singing), Schauspiel (Acting), and Dramaturgie (Dramaturgy). Collaboration with students from composition, conducting, and instrumental classes, as well as the Master's program Multimedia Composition, enriches practical research opportunities. Active artists from various theater fields supervise projects and guide students in their artistic exploration. In close cooperation with the stage design class of the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst (HfBK), the scenography program of the Hochschule Hannover (HsH), and the costume class of the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaft (HAW), artistic teams are formed that often collaborate successfully beyond their studies.
