About this program
The Project Year allows students to pursue an individual research project under the supervision of a faculty member. Work on the project includes participation in a research colloquium that includes advice on research best practices, use of libraries and archives, and preparing writing samples and applications for graduate programs. Students work individually with an artist or curator to complete a project for public showing, and create a profile as a professional artist through the development of a portfolio, and the acquisition of skills and knowledge vital in the contemporary art world. Areas of practice include film, video, painting, drawing, sculpture, theater, performance, installation, ceramics, as well as interdisciplinary work across fields. Courses in a wide range of subjects—academic and artistic—may be taken; either to cultivate new expertise, or to research themes essential to a project. The faculty mentor as well as many other practitioners introduce the challenges and possibilities available in Berlin as a center of the arts and base for the international artistic community: its resources, institutions, and modes of individual career path and collaboration. Suitably qualified applicants will also, if they wish, have the opportunity to gain experience in teaching through assistantships in studio workshops.
