About this program
The Bachelor and Master programs in Conducting (Orchestra and Choir) focus on training young people to become conductors who can conduct and rehearse at an excellent level. Students are supported in their development into artistically independent interpreters of orchestral and choral music. During their studies, they have the opportunity to work with instrumental and vocal ensembles of the university as well as with professional orchestras. Perfection of conducting technique, effective rehearsal methodology, stylistically sound interpretation, and authentic engagement with the ensemble are goals of the degree program. To achieve these, the main subject teachers mentor students in small groups, in individual lessons, as well as in rehearsals and concerts with subsequent video analysis. In each semester, students conduct concerts with symphonic or oratorio repertoire, working with various choirs and orchestras. Assistantships in opera productions and subsequent opera conducting offer students an introduction to the musical theater repertoire. Students in orchestral conducting find practice-oriented study conditions in work phases and workshops with ensembles such as the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the orchestra of the Detmold State Theater, the Detmolder Kammerorchester, and other professional ensembles. For rehearsals and artistic final concerts, students in choral conducting have access to the Hochschule für Musik Detmold's chamber choir or a professional vocal ensemble.
