About this program

The Orchestral Instruments program is the largest area of artistic teaching at the university. The university has string, woodwind, and brass classes, as well as a wide range of percussion instruments. During their studies, students are prepared for their careers as orchestral musicians in symphony, opera, and radio orchestras, or for freelance work. Soloistic training and concert exams are highly valued. The professors were or are themselves active in major European orchestras, some in principal positions. The university has excellently equipped facilities and a rich instrument collection. Practice rooms are available almost around the clock. Courses in musician health and career counseling further enhance the training. Students gain practical experience in the university orchestra and numerous chamber music ensembles. In cooperation with three other music academies in North Rhine-Westphalia, HfM Detmold is a partner of the Orchesterzentrum|NRW in Dortmund, which offers focused master's degree training for orchestral careers.
