About this program

The program is aimed at individuals who want to work professionally with music and make their work more effective. It focuses on enabling participation in culture through musical experience and exploration for as many people as possible. The curriculum covers methods, formats, and concepts for music education, ranging from children's and youth concerts to adult outreach, and from participatory formats to staged concepts for large ensembles. Music mediation is presented as a social practice and an interdisciplinary field focused on building relationships with diverse audiences, primarily of classical music, to increase audience numbers or engage new and specific audiences. The Master's program prepares graduates for roles such as concert educators, heads of music education departments in concert halls or orchestras, or to transform their own concert practices with moderations or staged concerts. Graduates can also expand the profile of their music school as cultural carriers or gain new impulses as cultural managers. Orchestral musicians can further their education to independently design their orchestra's concert education program or develop, plan, and finance their own innovative artistic music mediation projects. The program includes 20 presence weekends in Detmold, focusing on stage presence, speaking techniques, rhetoric, digital communication, the "Concertino Piccolino" concert lab, and seminars with workshops and lectures. The seminar program imparts theoretical and conceptual foundations and methodological formats of music mediation, considering current developments, topics, and trends. International experts provide insights into their practical work through workshops. The curriculum is supplemented by projects, collaborations, competitions, and excursions. Graduates become part of a strong international network, with over 200 alumni working in leading positions in the German-speaking music mediation scene since the program's inception in 1998.
