About this program

The "Music Theory and Aural Training" degree program imparts fundamental knowledge for engaging with musical content from various eras. It is taught as a double major with the two sub-disciplines of music theory and aural training, emphasizing the connection between listening and understanding. The program combines artistic and pedagogical elements, providing knowledge about repertoire, theoretical systems, and writings, while also developing listening skills. Students explore sound, aesthetics, compositional techniques, and the construction of compositions, styles, or genres within their historical context in small groups, using compositions and original manuscripts in various languages from antiquity to modern times. The acquired knowledge is applicable wherever music is taught, including general education schools, music schools, and music academies. The Hochschule has developed the online platform detmoldmusictools.de for integrated music learning through listening, playing, notation, and analysis exercises.
