About this program

As a specialist for media and information services in the university library, you make a significant contribution to scientific information provision. In your training, you are responsible for the procurement, provision, and indexing of media, as well as research in databases for over 18,000 users. The training takes place primarily in the Media Processing and User Services departments in the Alte Münze Library Central Office. However, deployment in the decentralized departmental libraries at Heger-Tor-Wall (Law and Economics) and Westerberg (Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, Mathematics/Informatics) is also an important part of the training. In Media Processing, trainees order printed and electronic media from booksellers or via web platforms with cross-publisher e-book offerings. When the media arrive at the library, they check the delivery and invoice. They create or edit title records for the media that are incorporated into the collection, meaning they enter formal information such as author, title, and publisher into the library software. The title record contains all the necessary information that enables users to identify the title in the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) and find it in the collection. In the User Services department, trainees perform book-related tasks, such as labeling media with stamps and stickers, which are necessary before shelving newly acquired media in the reading room. At the circulation desk, they register new users, check the required documents, and enter the relevant personal data into the library system. When lending media, they record the borrowed and returned books and re-shelve the returned media. They provide information on the library's usage regulations, answer inquiries, and offer orientation assistance.
