About this program

This English-taught, interdisciplinary, research-oriented Master's program is aimed at both (international) students of Theoretical Physics with strong mathematical inclinations and (international) students of Mathematics with a strong interest in physical applications. By attending courses from both faculties, you will be introduced to modern questions and methods in mathematics as well as in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. The study program is jointly designed by the Faculties of Physics and Mathematics. Starting from solid basic knowledge in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, advanced knowledge should be acquired that enables methodical and independent scientific work. The goal is to be introduced to and contribute to the state of current research in at least one area of Theoretical Physics, Mathematics, or their border area. The Faculties of Physics and Mathematics offer several, partly overlapping and complementary focus areas for this purpose. This program should enable students to understand the mathematically precise formulation as well as the physical relevance in scientific work of an interdisciplinary nature, to critically classify them, and to present their essential content understandably. The acquired degree should qualify for a doctorate in Theoretical Physics or Mathematics. For this purpose, there is an interdisciplinary graduate program, for example in Bielefeld. Furthermore, this Master's degree allows entry into one of the many professions open to these two disciplines.
