About this program

Mathematics is a very old and traditional science and is simultaneously so significant for our future. Whether IT, artificial intelligence, data science, finance or generally natural sciences – no future technology can do without mathematics. Accordingly, mathematicians are in demand on the job market. They are needed, for example, to tackle the challenges of modern society as data scientists or analysts, as actuaries for insurance companies or banks, or as IT consultants for AI applications. In the Master's program in Mathematics, you will deepen your skills in recognizing and analyzing structures, modeling situations, and solving problems, including those where intuition fails. You will thus be perfectly trained to develop answers to the big (future) questions. Within the Master's program, you will be introduced to current research questions in mathematics and learn to independently plan, conduct, and complete a research project, i.e., in addition to subject expertise, you will acquire job-qualifying skills in project management. The Bielefeld Faculty of Mathematics enjoys an excellent reputation in the international research landscape. Many international cooperations and the high number of mathematicians who choose Bielefeld for a research stay are proof of this. The special profile and the proven strength of the faculty in research enable a variety of specialization options. The Master's program in Bielefeld is characterized by very great freedom of choice, so that you can pursue your interests in content in a very attractive research environment and thus experience the fascination of research in scientific collaboration early on. As in any mathematics program, joint learning and working are of great importance. You work closely together in teams in exercise groups and receive individual support in exercises for lectures from students of higher semesters, doctoral candidates, and postdocs (tutors).
