About this program

Materials science and engineering are innovation drivers and key to a variety of product innovations. According to the Federal Ministry of Research, more than 70 percent of the gross social product in Western industrialized countries are directly or indirectly related to the development of new materials. In Germany, the sector generates annual revenues of almost one trillion euros and employs around five million people. Materials science and engineering create solutions to pressing future issues. New materials are more durable and safer and contribute to resource efficiency. Furthermore, new materials help implement climate protection goals and improve energy supply, enable sustainable mobility, bring new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in healthcare, and make everyday life easier for older people. Materials engineering makes important contributions to maintaining Germany's global leading position in key industries such as mechanical engineering, chemistry, precision mechanics and optics, construction, and the automotive industry. Modeling and simulation support the targeted development of new materials.
