About this program
A Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering offers a deeper and more complex understanding of materials and innovative technologies compared to a Bachelor's degree. It enables specialization in forward-looking areas such as nanotechnology, biomaterials or sustainable materials. In addition, the Master's opens up access to leading positions in research and development, as it promotes advanced analytical skills and independent work on complex projects. The Master's in Materials Science and Engineering is characterized by its specialization in functional materials that fulfill specific technical or physical functions, such as electrical, magnetic, optical or mechanical properties. The Course of Study combines in-depth knowledge of the structure and properties of these materials with state-of-the-art analytical methods and processing techniques. Students acquire expertise in the development of high-tech materials for future industries such as energy, electronics, medical technology and nanotechnology. Through research into new materials for batteries, sensors or semiconductors, they deepen their understanding and prepare themselves for leading positions in industry or science. The Master's programme not only provides theoretical knowledge, but also practice-oriented research, often in cooperation with innovative companies or interdisciplinary research groups. This Course of Study focuses on so-called functional materials, which are used in many current developments. Here you will deepen your knowledge and skills in Fundamental Research, materials development, their analysis and in process technology, combined with topics such as Economics and environmental compatibility. Lectures, exercises and practicals will prepare you for applied tasks in the field of materials development and characterization. You will work together with non-university research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology in Itzehoe and the Helmholtz Centre Hereon in Geesthacht. In the three-semester Master Lab, you will work in teams of three students on current tasks and questions from the Institute's Study Groups. The final Master's thesis requires all your knowledge and skills in a mostly practical problem from current research. Through cooperation with other research institutions and spin-offs, you will also have the opportunity to participate in their research areas and gain experience.
