About this program
A Master's degree in Materials Science and Business Administration offers a deeper and more complex understanding of materials, innovative technologies and their Economics components compared to a Bachelor's degree. It enables specialisation in future-oriented areas such as nanotechnology, biomaterials or sustainable materials and their management. In addition, the Master's opens up access to leading positions in research and development as well as in project management. The Master's in Materials Science and Business Administration continues the concept of an industrial engineering degree programme with a focus on engineering sciences from the Bachelor's degree. On the one hand, it is characterised by its specialisation in functional materials. In contrast to structural materials, these materials have a technical solution in their structure and can enable specific, efficient and usually very compact functions. The Course of Study combines in-depth knowledge of the structure and properties of these materials with state-of-the-art analysis methods and processing techniques. On the other hand, the Course of Study offers the opportunity to specialise in one or more areas of Business. The programme continues to focus on project management, but production, quality and logistics management or other specialisations are also possible. In this combination, students acquire skills in the management of small and large developments in the field of high-tech materials for future industries such as energy, electronics, medical technology and nanotechnology. This Course of Study focuses on so-called functional materials, which are used in many current developments. Here you will deepen your knowledge and skills in Fundamental Research, materials development, their analysis and in process technology, combined with topics such as Economics and environmental compatibility. Lectures, exercises and practicals will prepare you for applied tasks in the field of materials development and characterisation. You will work together with non-university research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology in Itzehoe and the Helmholtz Centre Hereon in Geesthacht. In the three-semester Master Lab, you have the opportunity to work in teams of three students on current tasks and questions from the Institute's Study Groups. The final Master's thesis requires all their knowledge and skills in a mostly practical problem from current research. Through co-operation with other research institutes and spin-offs, they also have the opportunity to participate in their research areas and management and gain experience. The Master's degree programme is an international, multilingual and intercultural course of study. Although the official language of instruction is English Language Teaching, you will learn many other languages during the course of the programme. The exchange through the intensive teamwork and the activities in the international Study Groups will allow you to gain experience in the field of international cooperation and intercultural life.
