About this program
The Master's program in Building Physics combines knowledge areas and questions from theoretical and applied building physics. In addition to the specialization in acoustics or sound insulation with associated measurement technology, the areas of thermal building physics and sustainable energy systems primarily deal with the scientific and mathematical concepts of the required modeling approaches and simulation tools. The program is a cooperative master's program with the building physics programs at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HFT) and - in external cooperation - with the energy and building technology, timber construction and finishing, and interior finishing programs at the Rosenheim University of Technology (THRo). The program combines the strengths of two universities, enabling broad, individually deepenable expertise in sustainable construction – from building physics fundamentals to energy concepts to finishing solutions. Thanks to the close integration of teaching and research, students benefit from current findings and can integrate their theses into practice-oriented research projects. This optimally prepares students for demanding tasks in planning, development, and research. In both semesters, mathematical and physical knowledge is expanded based on the bachelor's level, and special advanced modules in the areas of energy and acoustics are offered. A large proportion of laboratory work with practice-oriented exercises accompanies the theoretical training. With elective courses and interdisciplinary study projects, students set their focus: Acoustics and Sound Insulation (A) or Thermal-Hygric Building Physics and Energy Technology (E). The third semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis. The Master's thesis can be written at HFT Stuttgart, TH Rosenheim, or externally, depending on the area of responsibility. With the Master's thesis, students independently produce a practice-oriented work using scientific methods on current issues from the program's subject area. They apply current methods of building physics and related fields and reflect on the content learned during their studies. Students should demonstrate in their Master's thesis that they can work independently and scientifically. The topic should also provide the opportunity to develop their own ideas. The most important content of the work should be presented clearly and concisely in a final colloquium. They should show that they can prepare a complex topic well and explain it understandably.
