About this program

The Master of Arts in Literary Studies offers the opportunity to continue and deepen a previous humanities degree with a focus on general and comparative literary studies. The Master's program addresses general questions by systematically connecting individual philologies and examining literature on a broad theoretical basis in order to explore its internal connections, its conditions of origin, reception, and transformation. Comparative questions are discussed in the Master's program by examining the interplay of multiple languages and philologies, as well as the relationship between texts, artworks, and cultural practices (including film, radio plays, music) both within and beyond the European cultural sphere. The campus university of Bielefeld, with its specific architecture and infrastructure, encourages exchange between different academic disciplines. Master's students in Literary Studies can access a range of courses that bridge to related sciences and degree programs, particularly: English/American Studies, German Studies, Latin, and Romance Studies. Beyond studying in Bielefeld, students have the opportunity to gain intercultural experience at one of our partner universities in Europe and beyond. Bielefeld's Literary Studies program also prepares students for their professional future. Each semester, practice-oriented courses are offered by instructors who come from professional practice (e.g., from the museum or publishing sectors). There is also the possibility of completing an internship. The Master's program prepares students for potential career entry on the one hand, and on the other hand, offers the possibility of pursuing doctoral studies for a further academic career.
