About this program
The goal of the Lehramt Musik degree program is to qualify prospective music teachers for the diverse and demanding field of teaching at grammar schools and comprehensive schools. In order for students to develop into independent and reflective personalities with artistic, pedagogical, and scientific profiles, the concept of comprehensive musical education is at the center of the studies. This includes, in addition to high artistic-practical components, courses in music pedagogy, music theory, musicology, and educational science. Interdisciplinary projects (e.g., together with the degree programs Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy, Elementary Music Pedagogy, or Music Mediation) as well as a variety of ensembles of different styles allow for individual specialization. Furthermore, formats such as the Combo and Vocal Night and the "Schulmusik in Concert" recital evening not only provide a stage for the musical products developed but also strengthen the internal and cross-program community at the university. In the Lehramt degree program, the Detmold University of Music cooperates closely with the University of Paderborn. Students can choose whether to study a second subject at the University of Paderborn or to deepen their musical studies within the framework of the LAII degree program in the study variants Double Major Music, Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy, or Church Music. Through cooperation with schools in and around Detmold and with the centers for school-based teacher training (ZfsL) in the region, students can gain initial practical experience early on (e.g., in the orientation internship), which they can then deepen in the Master's program (especially in the practical semester), learning step by step to plan, reflect on, and further develop music lessons independently. Graduates of a music teaching degree program can expect excellent entry-level opportunities, as the NRW Ministry of Education recently confirmed again. Great importance is placed on the artistic training of prospective teachers in Detmold. In addition to their main subject lessons, students in the Lehramt Musik program have the opportunity to expand their practical musical skills in many university ensembles. These include, for example, the Big Band, the University Choir, the Chamber Choir, and the Choir Pop-Up. Furthermore, the HfM Detmold offers a range of practical music offerings that are explicitly tailored to the specifics of school music education. The HfM Detmold School Music Orchestra is a young ensemble founded in the winter semester 2020 by Prof. David Marlow, who also holds overall direction of the ensemble. The SMO offers students of the Lehramt degree programs as well as Instrumental Pedagogy with a focus on ensemble direction a unique teaching situation. In theory, leading an instrumental ensemble is something completely different from actually standing in front of a group of musicians. Conducting in front of the orchestra deepens the teaching content from the Orchestral Conducting course and enables students to gain new areas of experience. Through the changing instrumentation each semester and the challenge of finding suitable repertoire or arranging it if necessary, the professional reality in general education schools is...
