About this program
The program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for qualified music education in secondary schools (Stadtteilschulen and Gymnasien). This includes artistic and practical skills in two instruments, singing, practical piano playing, music and movement/rhythmics, choir conducting, orchestra conducting, arranging, practical score reading, and speech training. Theoretical-scientific knowledge is acquired in applied music theory, form theory, ear training, analysis and interpretation, and historical and systematic musicology. Artistic and theoretical skills are combined with pedagogical insights in seminars on school music practice and its didactics, as well as music education and inclusion, and are tested in the practical field of school. The curriculum covers Western art music, non-European music, jazz, folklore, and various forms of popular music. The program leads to a Master of Education and provides access to the preparatory service, which concludes with the Second State Examination, granting full teaching qualification in Hamburg. The program is a cooperation between HfMT Hamburg and the University of Hamburg, with music education at HfMT and educational science and subject didactics at the University of Hamburg. It includes an orientation and a core internship, as well as a Master's thesis written at the University of Hamburg.
