About this program

The program provides a broad foundation in the historical and theoretical principles of arts and media. It encourages critical thinking about current societal developments and explores new fields of design and research in close collaboration with practical disciplines. Unlike traditional art history programs, this course offers a systematic rather than purely historical approach, with a focus on modern and contemporary art and aesthetic theory. It also extends to aesthetic phenomena beyond art, such as the visual worlds of mass media and consumer phenomena. Media philosophy studies explore current forms of media staging in social and political contexts, with the opportunity to analyze and practice philosophy as an art form. Collaborations with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Heidelberg University enrich the study offerings. The program structure allows for the development of a personal study profile, similar to former Magister programs, and a PhD is possible in Art and Media Studies and Philosophy.
