About this program
The study program Kunsttechnologie, Konservierung und Restaurierung von Kunst- und Kulturgut (Art Technology, Conservation and Restoration of Art and Cultural Goods) was established in 1974 and is one of the first of its kind in Germany. The program is nationally and internationally established and has extensive contacts with institutions and workshops in monument preservation, museums, and other study locations for internships and exchanges. The program collaborates with Technische Universität Dresden, Bergbauakademie Freiberg, and Universität Oldenburg in research and teaching. With a five-year study duration, the Dresden restoration program is unique in Germany for balancing scientific documentation, practical conservation-restoration work, and scientific problem-solving with the examination requirements of a one-year diploma. The program is characterized by its comprehensive, scientifically founded, and practice-oriented curriculum, utilizing modern studios and laboratories. It is structured around two pillars: a scientifically oriented range of subjects including conservation science, art technology, and natural and art historical foundations, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration; and practical training in the examination, conservation, and restoration of original artworks, supplemented by external internships, summer schools, and on-site projects. Since 2000, the university has offered the possibility of doctoral studies in art technology and conservation sciences, with opportunities to participate in research projects.
