About this program
The interdisciplinary Master's program in Cultural Mediation focuses particularly on extracurricular mediation areas. It is characterized by comprehensive scientific-theoretical foundations and a high degree of practical orientation, preparing students for the dynamic and ever-expanding pedagogical field of activity in cultural institutions in a career-qualifying manner. Cultural mediation offers for people of all ages are provided in various institutional contexts (cultural offices, museums, theaters, festivals, concert halls, cultural associations, social institutions, etc.). Due to the interfaces with related fields such as pedagogy, dramaturgy, artistic planning, cultural management, audience development, and marketing, those active in this field are required to have a variety of different competencies. The program prepares students for this complex requirement profile by building solid cultural studies and theoretical knowledge and a reflexive attitude towards current cultural phenomena, while simultaneously providing extensive insights into concrete practical fields. Students gain experience in artistic practice (depending on individual focus areas in visual arts, music, theater/dance/performance, and/or literature/film) and engage with current forms and methods of mediation in a context-specific manner. The taught fundamentals of project and self-management enable them to independently plan, implement, and evaluate projects, as well as to develop a concrete career perspective and professional self-understanding. They benefit from the department's extensive network with cultural institutions in the region and beyond for the realization of their own project ideas. The program is aimed at graduates of cultural studies, artistic, social, and pedagogical Bachelor's programs from universities as well as art, music, and universities of applied sciences.
