About this program
The artistic teaching degree program prepares students for the diverse and demanding professional field of teaching at grammar schools in the subject of art. The teaching degree program is structured in two stages. It comprises a primarily subject-specific Bachelor's phase and a Master's phase tailored to pedagogical aspects. As with the study of Fine Arts, the teaching degree program is characterized by independent artistic work in the classroom. The development of one's own artistic self-understanding is the focus of the studies, which, in conjunction with subject-specific didactics, educational science content, and school internships, forms the basis for later teaching at school. As an alternative to a second academic subject (e.g., German or Mathematics), Intermedia Design (IMG) can be chosen in the artistic teaching degree program. The combination of Fine Arts and IMG as a second artistic-scientific major is therefore aimed at those who wish to concentrate entirely on teaching art at grammar schools. The Bachelor's degree focuses on the development of one's own artistic-practical work. In conjunction with art historical-theoretical studies and the curricularly intended components of applied arts, an interdisciplinary and broadly based artistic self-understanding emerges. The exceptionally large number of workshops and laboratories are of central importance for artistic training. Students of the artistic teaching degree program study together with students of the diploma program in Fine Arts in the basic and specialized classes. The B.F.A. focuses, in contrast to the M.Ed., on the subject-specific content of the teaching degree program. Its focus is on the study of the two main subjects. The scientific major at a partner university or the alternatively offered artistic-scientific major Intermedia Design (partial course IMG) at ABK Stuttgart comprises a total of 78 ECTS (6 semesters), while the artistic major at ABK is designed to be larger with 138 ECTS (8 semesters). In addition to the subject components, the Bachelor's program also includes an accompanying educational science study (including an orientation internship), which comprises a total of 18 ECTS. Together with the Bachelor's thesis, this results in a B.F.A. with a total of 240 ECTS. The cornerstones of the artistic teaching degree program are the modules in Fine Arts, each extending over an academic year (winter and summer semesters) and completed in classes: in the first year of study in a basic class for General Artistic Education, followed by a specialized class, the profile of which is usually oriented towards the denomination of the professorship leading the class. A change of specialized class during the studies is possible. The compulsory art practice modules of the basic and specialized classes also include modules from the fields of architecture and design. The range of courses in art history and theory, in addition to art practice, is an essential component of the Bachelor's program and is concluded with an obligatory oral module examination in art history. In the elective area, modules from the numerous offerings in art practice, art history, and applied arts can be chosen. In addition to subject-specific education in the main subject Fine Arts, the study of the artistic teaching degree program (B.F.A.) also includes artistic subject didactics and teaching components of educational science. On the one hand, the three-week orientation internship at the grammar school is prepared and followed up accordingly, and on the other hand, the personal competence of the prospective teachers in the subject of art is reflected and sharpened with regard to the requirements of the teaching profession at school.
