About this program
The study program is an ambitious project-based program characterized by the free choice and individual combination of artistic focal points. In this open process, a large number of artistic works are created, which are in the broadest sense cinematic works: short or long fictional, short or long documentary, or experimental and essayistic cinematic works, animated films, recordings of performances, cinematic hybrid forms of all kinds, and much more. The student is often the idea generator, author, and director in one person. With the first project, however, she simultaneously becomes the producer of her own work. From this point on at the latest, she must learn to take economic responsibility for her artistic project, her creative decisions, and possibly also the team. To recognize the connections and the interplay between the artistic and the commercial, and to understand and master the production processes, subject and foundation seminars with a focus on "Production" impart the essential economic, organizational, and technical foundations for the production of audiovisual works, as a project at the KHM or after graduation. Based on concrete student projects, we cover topics important for filmmakers: from idea development, through conventional and alternative financing methods, casting, packaging, calculation, production, shooting, and post-production planning, as well as opportunities for national and international distribution of one's own works. The subject area is expanded to include media law fundamentals to raise awareness when using copyrighted material. The creation of authorship through the creation of new works, respect for personal rights, and the handling of remuneration claims, as well as employment relationships through contract design, are also the focus of our seminars, alongside the responsibilities as a producer. We also emphasize the importance of sustainable film and media production and present the principles of Green Producing in this context.
