About this program
The program's focus is on the preservation of architectural monuments, but also includes the museum sector. Direct contact with the construction professions of architecture and civil engineering at the university, reference to surrounding architectural monuments, buildings, artworks, and museums in the rich cultural landscape of Brandenburg and Berlin provide optimal framework conditions. In the first semesters, the foundation for understanding complex interrelationships in (building) monument preservation is laid. The most important basics of the study specializations wood, stone, and wall painting are taught. Students also gain insights into the fields of architecture, urban planning, and civil engineering and learn to think and work interdisciplinarily. The goal is to enable future restorers to preserve and restore historical works of art and cultural heritage such as paintings, monuments, sculptures, furniture, and buildings for future generations – to conserve and restore them. Environmentally friendly and sustainable practices ensure the long-term preservation of these objects. Students complete their practical semester in institutions and workshops outside the university. They apply their knowledge in practice and critically review it. Numerous cooperations with institutions and companies at home and abroad offer valuable opportunities for collaboration. Specialization in the higher semesters opens up opportunities for students to work as restorers of wood, stone, or wall paintings. They deepen their understanding of scientific methods as well as knowledge in monument preservation, art, and restoration history. Emphasis is placed on practical work with objects and research. The study program focuses on the subjects of conservation and restoration sciences, humanities and natural sciences, artistic design, and applied historical or conservation-restoration techniques.
