About this program

The goal of a composition degree in Detmold is for students to mature into well-rounded artistic personalities and to assert themselves with their own positions within contemporary art. In addition to imparting fundamental knowledge in practical and theoretical teaching (e.g., work analysis, composition techniques, electroacoustics), young composers discover and develop their creative potential through adequate craftsmanship. They forge close connections internally and build an intensive network with their fellow students to exchange ideas, develop perspectives, and explore aesthetic backgrounds for their works. For their compositional craft, they develop fundamental knowledge of traditional playing techniques for all instruments, which serves as a basis for expanding creative playing techniques. In dialogue with guests from the contemporary music scene, this knowledge is further developed and tested using works. Close connections exist with the Erich-Thienhaus-Institut. Through the competencies of students and teachers in audio and video production, creative paths for compositions and possibilities for online documentation of works arise. There are also opportunities to connect with the teaching of the Center for Music and Film Informatics and the Master's program Audiovisual Arts Computing founded in 2017. Experimental and cross-border formats, such as those in installation/intermedia art, performative art, and music theater, are also part of the curriculum. Techniques from applied composition and new classical music are also taught. Students explore the full spectrum of compositional forms of expression. They learn to experiment to find their own path or to reflect on it more productively and critically. In individual lessons, ways are sought to develop one's own sound language. The Master's program "Composition" offers the opportunity to deepen existing knowledge and test it in inter-semester projects. Three areas can be selected from various offerings, such as composition for large ensembles, composition with scenic elements, sound installation, conceptual art, composition pedagogy, or research. Thus, specialization can take place. Depending on their artistic development, composition students can draw from a broad range of possibilities to develop their own artistic signature. Once they have embarked on a path, the ability to communicate their understanding of music to the musical public becomes another learning objective. For artistic work on their own compositions, the Ensemble Earquake, which specializes in performing contemporary music, is available to young composers. Renowned guests share their knowledge with students through lectures and workshops during their studies.
