About this program

The interdisciplinary Master's program InterAmerican Studies/Estudios InterAmericanos deals with social, cultural, historical, and political developments of the Americas in their national specificity and with regard to transnational integration tendencies. In connection with current research contexts, questions of transnationality, interculturality, globalization, and world society are focused. Literature, cultural and media studies, linguistics, sociology, political science, and transnational history enter into an interdisciplinary dialogue. Applicants for the Master's program InterAmerican Studies/Estudios InterAmericanos are expected to have an interest in interdisciplinarity, intercultural exchange, international relations, and studying abroad. As an international program, teaching takes place in English and Spanish. Students acquire well-founded knowledge of the cultures, societies, and history of the Americas. In particular, they acquire the analytical ability to analyze transnational contexts and transcultural interactions. In view of the increased demand for media literacy in the job market, the Master's program InterAmerican Studies/Estudios Inter-Americanos conducts annual study projects. As a consistent continuation of its internationalization, the Master's program InterAmerican Studies/Estudios InterAmericanos offers a double degree option with the Maestría en Literaturas Interamericanas at the Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico). This program variant allows interested parties to simultaneously study for the Bielefeld Master's and the Maestría in Guadalajara and graduate with both titles. With its intercultural double qualification for the Anglo- and Latin American regions, the program trains experts in international cultural, social, and communication processes and imparts key qualifications in the fields of cultural and knowledge transfer. This interdisciplinary character allows for flexible career choices. Graduates of the MA program work in various fields such as management consulting, international organizations, event and cultural management, press and media, tourism, consulates and embassies, as well as universities and language schools.
