About this program
The Hochschule für Musik Detmold offers a modern instrumental and vocal pedagogy program. Based on a solid artistic development on the instrument or voice, it is oriented towards the diverse requirements of future professional life. Trained instrumental teachers teach at municipal, state, or private training institutions (music schools, conservatories, or music academies) or work independently. During the studies, lively forms of work, individual support, and encouragement allow for attention to be paid to the personal strengths and weaknesses of individuals. In the sense of close career guidance, students and lecturers are in continuous dialogue to discover and emphasize focal points of personal development. Different specialization options are possible in the areas of elementary music education, ensemble playing, jazz-rock-pop, musicology, theory/ear training, a second instrumental major, voice, or music mediation. The university cooperates with music schools and schools in the region, as well as with a variety of independent instrumental and vocal pedagogues, so that internships and student projects are a regular part of the studies. Particularly noteworthy is the career-oriented orientation internship, where students work in related fields, receive new inspiration, and are informed about current labor market conditions. With a wide range of possibilities, graduates teach at music schools throughout Germany and Europe. Their own creative projects range from the initiative 'Bach by bike' and the Detmold Music and Art School 'GlasHaus' to innovative music school foundations outside of Europe. Others pursue a scientific path and conduct research in prominent locations on current issues in instrumental pedagogy.
