About this program

The study program understands interior architecture as a discipline in dialogue with the fine arts. The aim of the study is to enable students to analyze spatial, constructive, and societal issues in the complex field of interior architecture and to develop independent concepts and solutions for them. The study promotes and demands an artistic and scientific approach to projects and requires students to communicate them convincingly. Graduates acquire, in particular, the ability for artistic, technical, ecological, and social design and planning of spaces as well as for the transformation of our built and grown environment, with particular attention to the responsible handling of existing structures. Design is understood as an activity that arises from knowledge of context, space, construction, and material, which further develops this knowledge in artistic freedom and theoretical reflection, and finally translates it into architecturally coherent concepts. This understanding is supported by close cooperation with the artistic classes of the Academy, joint teaching formats, as well as practical experience and project work in the workshops, which shape the craft-artistic training. In the Bachelor's program, the foundations of interior architecture are built up and gradually deepened in interrelated design and theory formats. Teaching in the following semesters builds on this. Analysis, craft, artistic practice, and theoretical knowledge continuously interlock, so that projects can be worked on from different perspectives. The study is supplemented by opportunities for international experience outside the Academy. In the consecutive Master's program, these foundations are continued and reflected upon in larger and more complex design tasks. Particular emphasis is placed on an independent artistic engagement with architecture and interior architecture, as well as on the precise elaboration of projects. Individual thematic focus areas in accompanying modules are expressly desired. Interdisciplinary cooperation remains a central component of the study. Both degree programs conclude with a thesis in the final semester: the Bachelor's thesis in the eighth semester or the Master's thesis in the fourth semester.
