About this program

The Master's program in Computer Science is research-oriented and consecutive, building upon a research-oriented Bachelor's program in Computer Science. However, it can also be taken by graduates of Bachelor's programs in Engineering Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Informatics, or other related degree programs. The Master's program in Computer Science aims to deepen the subject-specific and methodological competence acquired in a university degree in a main field of Computer Science with a research orientation. This also includes broadening professional practical skills and providing high-level training in the fundamentals of Computer Science. Graduates will thus be enabled to independently address complex problems in the field of Computer Science and solve them using scientific methods. Furthermore, teamwork, social competence, and communication skills are developed to a high degree during the course of study. The Computer Science study program is both interdisciplinary and integrative, characterized by intensive research orientation. It is unusual for a university degree program that students can integrate a practical semester into their studies. The program includes few compulsory subjects, which, however, deepen insights into the cornerstones of Computer Science and adapt students' knowledge. In addition, there is a very large and diverse range of elective options, with the possibility of completing one of the specializations Data Science/Machine Learning, Algorithmics and Logic, Computer Vision and Visualization, IT Security, and IoT Engineering. Through integration into a technically oriented university (especially Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering), the Ilmenau study program offers the opportunity to gain insights into these areas through lectures or projects. This offer becomes even larger when considering the technology companies in the Ilmenau area and at the Erfurter Kreuz, which also offer attractive job opportunities after graduation. And finally, studying here is fun! As a student, you will study in small groups of usually less than 20 fellow students. This allows for intensive and individual support.
