About this program

The study of history aims at an object that is neither immediately experienceable nor completed. Rather, it must always be newly constituted and explored, starting from the experiences, problems, and orientation needs of each present. This requires a high degree of conceptual and methodological awareness (critique); at the same time, it forces reflection and relativization of one's own point of view. Scientific work here leads to an awareness of one's own place. The subject of historical science are the testimonies of human action, suffering, and thinking that are considered significant by a present. For their exploration, history uses a toolkit of highly differentiated and ever-new scientific methods. Chronologically, historical science is divided into Ancient History (8th century BC - 6th century AD), Medieval History (5th-16th century), and Modern History (16th century to the present). Spatially, it encompasses all continents and cultures, with a focus on the history of Central and Western Europe having developed in Frankfurt am Main. Systematically, historical science divides its subject matter according to various research interests into the history of ideas, political history, social and economic history, history of science, history of religion, and others. Given the diversity of methods in the historical disciplines, the interdisciplinary nature of the degree program is already evident. The "Frankfurt 4+1 Model" provides for a four-year Bachelor's degree program in which the main subject is supplemented by two minor subjects. This offers students more individual combination options, which in turn lead to more synergy effects between the individual disciplines. The Master's program is shortened to one year as a result. The degree program is designed so that students become familiar with all epochs in different study phases before specializing in a topic of their choice towards the end. Due to the strong research orientation of historical science in Frankfurt, there is a rich range of courses that incorporate current projects, thus giving students insights into the process of scientific work and enabling them to conduct their own research early on.
