About this program

The professional practice of the Opera and Concert Singing study area requires intensive training in vocal training, stage practice, and role study. If the profession is practiced later, flexible and careful handling of the voice is a must. Singers should be able to use their voices for up to six hours a day within different roles or genres without signs of fatigue. A secure foundation that creates this prerequisite is laid at the university in individual lessons, class evenings, and scenic performances. The top priority: Singing means responsible handling of one's own body. The training takes place on the overall personality of the person with all their individual physical and psychological prerequisites. Students can benefit from the professional conditions of a four-division house during their studies: There is a cooperation with the Landestheater Detmold. As part of the summer production, a work from the opera repertoire is rehearsed over the period of one semester. While the university provides direction and orchestra, the Landestheater is responsible for technology, logistics, and costumes. Another component of the cooperation with the Landestheater Detmold is the Opera Studio. Here, singers in the postgraduate program Music Theater have the opportunity to get to know theater life over a longer period and to deepen their repertoire. The house takes them under contract for two years. In the field of art song, the award-winning series FORUM Lied fest has established itself. It regularly takes place under a changing motto on the stage of the Theater Gütersloh. In this context, students and teachers of the Detmold University of Music have already released three CDs on the cpo label with fairy tale settings by Carl Heinrich Reinecke.
