About this program
Geography combines natural science and social science research questions and methods. Many current challenges of the 21st century – climate change, migration, globalization, desertification, sustainable urban and regional development – are the subject of geographical studies. The program provides important theoretical foundations essential for understanding and managing these complex problems. 'Physical Geography' examines the structure and dynamics of our physical environment and the forces and processes acting within it. 'Human Geography' deals with the structure of societies and economies and the spatial dimension of human action, attempting to identify the causes and effects of social inequalities from the local (cities, regions) to the global scale. The content of geography studies is conveyed through various teaching formats, which in Frankfurt include lectures, seminars, and a lot of project work, e.g., through on-site (project) seminar days (excursions) or research projects. The Mentoring/Tutoring program and modules on professional practice support future career entry. The institutes promote study abroad opportunities, e.g., within the ERASMUS+ program. The Frankfurt Geography department is one of the largest university geography institutions in Germany, with 15 professors and over 60 research associates, offering a wide range of geographical research and teaching focuses and good supervision with small groups. A special feature of Frankfurt Geography is the early specialization in Human Geography (B.A. degree) or Physical Geography (B.Sc. degree) after the 2nd semester. The Institute for Physical Geography is located in the Geo-Center on the Riedberg Campus, while Human Geography is in the new Social Sciences building on the Westend Campus. Students have direct access to the facilities of neighboring disciplines in the natural and social sciences, such as laboratories and libraries, and short distances to seminar offerings in minor subject areas.
