About this program
Systems biology is an innovative interdisciplinary research area that is continuously evolving. It aims to understand and map the dynamic processes within a cell, organ, or organism. The bilingual Master's program "Genome Based Systems Biology" pursues exactly this approach. Due to the rapid progress in new high-throughput methods in biological and medical research, interested parties in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics can collect extensive data. Analyzing this data and linking the individual levels paves the way for theoretical approaches and computer-aided models that simulate biological processes. Students in this broadly based program get hands-on experience with data collection at Bielefeld University, learning a wide spectrum of experimental methods and training in the operation of complex equipment in small groups. Furthermore, they deepen their basic biological knowledge and acquire the bioinformatics and mathematical skills necessary to understand, analyze complex datasets, and develop appropriate models. In the second year, students decide based on their interests whether to focus more on theoretical work on the computer or in the laboratory. Projects and theses are also gladly completed in cooperation with external academic institutions, research departments in clinics, and companies. When working on current research topics, students practice "good laboratory practice" and can also gain experience in project management. This prepares them optimally for subsequent doctoral studies and/or professional activities in areas such as biotechnology, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy, or bioinformatics.
