About this program
The BA program English Studies is structured around literature, culture, and linguistics and is divided into 4 specializations: English Literary Studies, Cultural, Intellectual, and Social History (KIS), New English Literatures and Cultures (NELK), and English Linguistics. The program provides knowledge about the forms and developments of literature, culture, and language in Great Britain and other English-speaking countries (excluding the USA). It examines the various cultural productions, texts, and media in which these processes occur, the social groups and institutions involved, and the transcultural dimensions of English literatures, cultures, and language in history and the present. Additionally, students acquire knowledge and skills from general literary studies, cultural studies, and general and applied linguistics. The Institute for England and American Studies (IEAS) offers English Studies as a major or minor. The combination with American Studies is popular, but many other combinations are possible. IEAS focuses on historically contextualized cultural studies (especially: Visual Culture Studies, Memory Studies & Gender Studies), postcolonial theories, and contemporary literary research, and cooperates with the Research Centre for Historical Humanities and the Cornelia Goethe Centre. In terms of language practice, creative writing workshops, poetry readings, a Theatre Workshop, and a theatre group (The Chaincourt Theatre) are offered. Beyond the university, the city offers a diverse cultural program: from English cinema and theater to events of the German-British Society.
