About this program
The program imparts knowledge and methods of current and past documentary practices. Students are enabled to independently find topics and material, develop them to project readiness, produce and complete them under the best possible conditions. These projects aim for the unedited documentary film, characterized by the author's handwriting. Furthermore, in the main study phase, information about formatted documentary film slots, series, and television series is conveyed in close cooperation with editors and producers. At the beginning of the studies, the history of documentary film is covered in a foundational seminar using exemplary examples, and related methods are discussed. Practical modules introduce and train research and interview techniques. Two practice films are included: the first practices the documentary filmmaker's reaction in the interplay of camera and sound to selected and researched events on video. The second observes and records a repetitive activity such as a work process or a recurring event. In the main study phase, subject seminars on various documentary forms and practices take place regularly. Topics include: film and television essay, long-term observations, hybrid forms, TV feature, children's documentary, found footage, historical representation in film. Seminars are also offered on documentary film production, interview and research, as well as camera work in documentary film and editing. Diploma Colloquium: In a subject seminar, final projects are discussed from conception through the shooting phase to editing and post-production.
