About this program

The program is a two-subject Bachelor's degree followed by a Master's degree in Secondary Teacher Education for Gymnasiums. The Bachelor's program lasts six semesters and requires a second subject to be chosen. The Master's program lasts four semesters and leads to a Master of Education degree. The Master's degree is a prerequisite for the preparatory service (Referendariat). German studies, as a humanities discipline, explores, documents, and conveys the German language and literature in their historical and contemporary forms. Modern German studies are seen as a combination of three sub-disciplines: linguistics, older literary studies (medieval studies), and newer German literary studies. In addition to these subject-specific components, the program includes German didactics. At the University of Osnabrück, the subject is divided into the areas of literary and linguistic studies and covers the entire spectrum of German literature and language. Specializations include epochs of German literature and genre theory, children's and young adult literature, text interpretation, grammatical structures of German, orthography, first and second language acquisition, and literature of the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. The didactics of German deals with the teaching of these subject-specific contents in schools.
