About this program
The program is a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program for primary school teaching, which is part of a two-stage teacher training program. It consists of a six-semester Bachelor's degree in 'Education, Training and Instruction' (BEU), followed by a four-semester Master's degree in 'Primary School Teacher Education' (M.Ed.). The Bachelor's degree requires the study of German as one of two subjects. German studies as a humanities discipline explores, documents, and conveys the German language and literature in their historical and contemporary forms. Modern German studies are seen as a combination of linguistics and modern German literature. In addition to these subject-specific components, the program includes German didactics. At the University of Osnabrück, the subject is divided into the areas of literary and linguistic studies and covers the entire spectrum of German literature and language. Focus areas include epochs of German literature and genre theory, children's and young adult literature, text interpretation, grammatical structures of German, orthography, first and second language acquisition, literature of the Middle Ages and early modern period. The didactics of German deals with the teaching of these subject contents in primary schools.
