About this program
The Master's program in German as a Foreign Language and German Studies builds on a successful undergraduate program offered since 1979, which has been and continues to be in demand by both German and international students. The program's main goal is to impart in-depth academic and research-oriented competencies in the German language and culture, including German-language literature from Germany and abroad. As students of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) and German Studies, you will scientifically deepen your understanding of the acquisition and teaching of German as a foreign and second language, combined with linguistic and/or literary studies from a foreign perspective. You will gain insight into relevant related disciplines such as foreign language research (language teaching and learning research, foreign/second language didactics, second language acquisition), linguistics, cultural studies, and literary studies. A stay abroad (ERASMUS semester abroad or internship abroad) is desired. The department and faculty offer various support options for this. The program qualifies you for professional fields in language and cultural mediation (activities in domestic and foreign adult education institutions such as adult education centers, language schools, including intermediary organizations like DAAD or Goethe-Institut), in DaF/DaZ departments of domestic universities, and in German Studies departments of foreign universities (possibly after completing a doctorate), in German schools abroad, in intercultural exchange, in pedagogical liaison work and further education, for collaboration in internationally active companies, and for collaboration in international organizations. The general goal of the program is to develop research, planning, and mediation skills that are in demand in these professional fields, for example, as evaluation and development competence for language and cultural offerings, as well as teaching/learning materials and media. The special combination with German Studies allows you to specialize in linguistics or literary studies and is particularly beneficial for activities in language and cultural work, as well as in teaching and research at European and non-European universities.
