About this program

The Detmolder Jungstudierenden-Institut (DJI) is a pillar of artistic talent development at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. Through targeted early promotion of musically gifted children and adolescents aged 12 to 19, the institute counteracts the shortage of young talent among German study applicants. 80 percent of the young students enroll in a degree program at the HfM Detmold after successfully completing their preliminary studies. The focus of the training is on developing the artistic personality as a whole. In addition to main subject lessons, secondary subjects (improvisation, music theory, ear training, chamber music, and choral singing) are taught in intensive weekends. Concert visits and educational trips contribute to the development of a comprehensive understanding of music and promote social competence. The unique selling point of the training at the DJI is the individual support of the young people. The university adapts the curriculum to individual needs and, in consultation with schools and parents, finds a suitable solution strategy that guarantees optimal learning success. This so-called "Detmolder Model" ensures sustainable success: the young students dedicate themselves to music not only with diligence but also with joy and passion.
