About this program
The Master's program Conflict Studies and Peacebuilding links research and practice. The aim is to provide students with a broad understanding of social science theories and methods of conflict research, while simultaneously familiarizing them with practical fields of peacebuilding. Students engage with fundamental concepts, terms, and approaches in peace, conflict, and violence research, whether from a political theory and history of ideas perspective, based on comparative studies, or from the viewpoint of international relations. Students deal with the role of different conflict actors, causes and dynamics of conflicts and violence, as well as practices of conflict mediation and peacebuilding by international, state, and non-state actors. They engage with different political systems, institutions, and societies, examining state-society relations as well as international and global contexts. They investigate power and violence relations as well as economic and social frameworks. They learn to apply qualitative and quantitative methods in analyzing concrete conflicts or peace processes. An empirical focus is the study of violent, intra-state conflicts ("civil wars"). The program also integrates findings and experiences from professional practice. Students learn to apply scientific knowledge and methodological approaches to problem and action fields of peacebuilding. Practitioners present their organizations and working methods in a regular course. Advanced seminars impart practice-oriented tools - for example, in project management, methods of program evaluation, or scientific policy advice. Through appropriate teaching formats and a compulsory internship, students gain a structured insight into practical fields of conflict analysis, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding. As an English-language program, the M.A. is aimed at students who aspire to a future professional career in an international environment.
