About this program
In the Master's program Buddhist Studies and Contemplative Traditions, you will acquire in-depth knowledge in the field of Buddhism and contemplative traditions in the past and present. You will receive a sound education in one of the Buddhist source languages: Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, or Mongolian. The Master's program Buddhist Studies and Contemplative Traditions is a consecutive Master's program taught in English. The study includes a basic training in one of the Buddhist source languages (Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese, Mongolian), combined with a profound engagement with Buddhist culture, history, and literature. Buddhist studies offer numerous starting points for contributions to current social discourses and contribute to a deeper understanding of global cultural transfer and the accompanying transcultural interactions. You will be enabled to access and scientifically evaluate sources in the mentioned languages, to conduct independent research, and to contribute to scientific and cultural communication. Furthermore, you have the opportunity to acquire or deepen religious studies competencies within the scope of the program. The study is interdisciplinary, with modules offered in cooperation with Chinese Studies, Religious Studies, and other subjects. In the first year of study, you will study two modules in a Buddhist source language, either introductory or advanced. In the second year of study, you will complete a research internship, attend a colloquium, and write your Master's thesis. The internship can include a language course, independent work on texts or objects, the application of philological or literary studies methods, or the writing of a study on a subject-specific topic. You are encouraged and supported to spend part of your studies abroad.
